CASE BACKGROUND
Mare with long list of 1D credentials began getting strong in her run, hitting barrels, and not finishing her third. Owner pursued vet work, including a BAL and scoping to investigate for EIPH. All of which came back negative. Her symptoms continued progressing, then began bleeding out of her left nostril at rest. Owner and veterinarians still had concerns for bleeding, however, results continued to come back negative. Several extensive BioScan reports were run, ultimately with numerous findings over the course of these reports initiating the curiosity of looking into the possibility of an ethmoidal hematoma.
This case, along with every other case, required a full body lens analyzing how each system (and findings) is connected. The owner then proceeded to have skull radiographs done, where an indication of a possible mass in the ethmoidal sinus region was appreciated. Ultimately, a CT scan confirmed an ethmoidal hematoma, which was then treated accordingly. Again, I want to reiterate, my job is absolutely not to diagnose anything.
The purpose of the BioScan is to identify stressors in the body. At the end of the day, this is just another example of how imperative collaborative work is. This mare is back in the performance arena again, not because of me or the BioScan, but because of a team that worked together with the mutual goal of helping this mare.
